Credit score Q&A: “How do I get my credit score?”

If you’re curious where you stand credit score-wise, the best way to put the question to bed is by ordering a credit report.

However, the free credit report offered by the government doesn’t actually contain a credit score – you only get a credit report, which includes all the relevant info regarding payment history, collections, charge-offs, etc.

If you actually want to view your credit score, you’ll have to pay an additional fee.

Credit Scores are Controlled by the Credit Bureaus

The 3 major credit bureaus are able to stay in business because they sell credit scores to consumers.

As a result, the government can’t offer a free credit score because it would put these private companies out of business.

So how do you get your credit score without paying an arm and a leg?

Well, first off, there are three credit scores (one for each credit bureau), not just one.

Paying for each credit score separately, or paying for just one doesn’t make a lot of sense.

For starters, one credit score doesn’t give you the overall picture because credit scores differ amongst bureaus.

Additionally, a creditor may rely on a credit score from the credit bureau that you don’t purchase a credit score from.

So it’s only wise to get your credit score from a company that provides access to all three.

Credit Score Pro is currently offering free access to all three credit scores for 30 days, making it a good choice if you want to view yours.

Keep in mind that if you don’t cancel within the 30-day trial period, you’ll be charged $14.95 per month thereafter for credit monitoring.

In today’s academic world, most students need a college student credit card and the good news is that the offers for these are plentiful. Many creditors are very anxious to have the new college student apply for and get approved for a student credit card, because they realize that if they can strike up a good relationship with this customer at this young age, then it is highly likely that they will be their customer for life. And make no mistake about it, the credit card industry is making money hand over fist these days, especially since very few consumers pay their entire bill in full at the end of the month, so all those interest charges add up.

But the ease of getting a college student credit card is also the bad news because many college students have not yet learned responsible financial management. T

Two weeks ago was Credit Education Week in Canada. Now if you are like me and don’t live in Ontario, you may not have heard a great deal, but the more I have looked into Credit Education Week, the more impressed I have become with this initiative. Barton Goth, Bankruptcy Trustee

From all appearances this is a national event, although I made a number of calls and inquiries throughout Alberta and couldn’t find anyone who knew anything about it. Now I did find it interesting that I only heard about this event third hand from a colleague who practices in Ontario, as I am very active in the financial community and make an effort to stay on top of local and national news as it pertains to the economy, and personal finance, and I had no idea this event had taken place. So for now it appears to largely be based in Toronto and other major centers, and is supported by many major players across the financial community. It is Read full article…
