When I was a kid growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, money seemed to always be in short supply. My children today cannot fathom what it’s like to come home to a supper of turnip greens and cornbread … and nothing else. Or to spend ALL of Spring Break doing yard work around the house and planting the family vegetable garden. Or going on vacation by traveling to a cousin’s home in another state and sleeping on their sofa and eating their food. No, growing up, we didn’t go on the nice vacations, didn’t eat at fancy restaurants, and didn’t have the latest fashionable clothing. I didn’t even know what fashionable clothing was until the 8th grade when everyone at the private school I began attending wore shirts with those little alligators on them and tennis shoes with a swoosh on the side. I didn’t have one of those shirts and I certainly didn’t have those shoes. It was Kmart and Keds for me.

Discover Card customers can look forward to some exciting perks at the 2012 Orange Bowl including premium seating and exclusive experiences.

Discover officials have this week announced that Discover Card customers will be able to access premium seating at the Orange Bowl in 2012 and can also sign up for exclusive cardmember experiences.

These special experiences, offered at the January 4, 2012 event include a special Discover “Tailgate Party” prior to the game where there will be entertainment, great food and refreshing beverages.

There will also be a special “Fan Zone” available throughout the day. The night before the Orange Bowl 2012, cardholders can also enjoy a sneak preview of the planned halftime entertainment.

Discover spokesperson Jennifer Murillo said that the special online ticketing system for Discover Card customers would ensure that their valued cardholders had access to “the best seats in the house.”

The economy stinks. You and I know it, and the Federal Reserve knows it, too. Thats why they announced Operation Twist earlier this week. Operation Twist? Whats that, you say? Its yet another attempt to drive interest rates down in hopes of spurring economic activity.

This time around, theyre targeting 10-year bond Treasury rates because lots of interest rates, including mortgage rates, are tied to the 10-year bond rate. In short, theyre planning on selling some of the shorter term bonds that theyre holding and using the proceeds to buy longer term bonds.

More specifically, over the next nine months, they intend to sell $400B in short-term government bonds and use the proceed to buy longer-term bonds. As demand for these longer-term bonds rises, their interest rates will fall. This makes sense, as you dont have to pay as much interest to find buyers in a high demand market.

So The big question is whether or not this will work.
